Sign in with Apple on Fing

Apple’s iOS 13 was launched in 2019. You can sign into your Fing account with 'Sign in with Apple', leveraging Touch ID and Face ID, and use Fing's dark mode directly from the phone settings. The Fing App will also request location permissions to continue to read the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and address (BSSID).

When you use 'Sign in with Apple', you can use the Face ID or Touch ID on your device (or username+password on the web application) to create or merge with an existing account. You can decide if you want to share the following with us:

  • Your real name (or change it at the 'sign up' stage)
  • Your real email of the Masked Relay email, which is a masked email that Apple will receive and relay to the final user

Why are my locations permissions requested?

Wi-Fi information is currently considered by Google and Apple as relevant data that can identify a course location. For example, if you scan a network called 'NY LaGuardia Airport, this can reveal where you are. Therefore, all apps that request access to Wi-Fi details must now also ask users for location permission. This informs the user that sharing information may reveal your location.

What happens if I do not want to grant locations permissions?

If you do not want to grant location permissions, the following occurs:

  • The app cannot show the name of the Wi-Fi (the name will appear empty).
  • The app cannot differentiate between Wi-Fi networks, so each scan will restart from scratch. Previous customizations will also not be loaded for that network.

We strongly recommend granting locations permissions to keep the App fully functional.

I initially did not grant my location permissions, but now I want to

Initially, users are promoted to grant permission to access location. If you have previously denied permission and now want to grant permission:

  • Go to phone settings
  • Click Fing
  • Click Location/Location Permissions
