New Gateway Alerts

A gateway is a device that routes traffic between two separate networks. For example, a gateway within your home network is your router. Your router acts as a gateway between your personal network and your broadband provider’s network.

When you receive an alert from your Fingbox or other monitoring unit that a new gateway has appeared on your network, this means that a device has become a gateway.  For example, some triband routers have an interchangeable pool of addresses that change a lot. The gateway may also come from a device that redirects everything to itself, such as a hardware firewall. Alternatively, a device you are not aware of has attached to your network and is redirecting all the data.

When you are alerted about a new gateway, check whether the gateway comes from a trusted or malicious source so you can accept or reject it..

Accept a trusted gateway

This means you know what the new gateway is and wish to accept it as a trusted gateway.

If you have received the alert within the past 24 hours:

  1. On Fing Mobile App, click the Overview tab on the bottom toolbar.
  2. Click the circular icon with three dots at the top right of the page.

This will open the My Networks page. You will be asked to click Ok to accept the gateway.

If it has been over 24 hours since you received the alert:

  1. On Fing Mobile App, click the Overview tab on the bottom toolbar.
  2. Click the Online devices widget or the blue See devices button.
  3. Click the Notifications tab and click the alert in the list.

Alternatively, from Overview, click the Online devices widget or the blue See devices button to see what has been added as a trusted gateway.

You will be asked if you would like to accept the new gateway. Click Ok to accept.

If you do not know what the new gateway is, check if a new device has recently joined your network. This is most likely the source of the new gateway. If it is a device you do not recognise, reject it and block the device.  Go to Block Devices and Pause Internet Access to block the device..

Fing Desktop

The gateway detection on Fing Desktop is automatic. The desktop detects the gateway on your network and reports the information in the network page.
