You can see and monitor network users and the length of time they spend online through the Presence feature. Assigning a user to a device tells you who owns selected devices on your network, for example, a family member or home service provider, and the time each user spends connected to your network.
You can assign multiple devices to users but only one presence device. A presence device is the device you assign to a user, and from which you can get presence alerts. For example, if your child's presence device is a phone, you will be notified if this device has entered your network when your child comes home, or if this device is online or offline. You may assign other devices to your child such as a laptop and smart watch but only the presence device will be notified, and you will not get presence alerts if the other devices join your network or go online or offline. However, network alerts can be enabled separately for both the presence and other devices on the device detail page.
Fing recommends selecting a mobile phone as a presence device. Select the device that you carry with you 24/7 or usually. A tablet or smartwatch may be another good option.
To assign a presence device, you must assign users to devices first. In summary, to set up users and presence, do this.
- Assign a User to a Device(s).
- Assign a Presence Device for each user. This will automatically start tracking users in the presence chart and timeline events.
- Schedule time limits for users, for example, you can set up different schedules for bedtime, homework, or weekends.
As well as managing user presence online, with the Fing presence feature, you can also:
- Monitor usage over set periods of time.
- Generate reports of activity and usage.
Fing Agent is a good option when using Presence as it can track user online and offline connectivity 24/7 and show exact online presence over time.
Assign Users with Fing Desktop
To assign users using Fing Desktop, do this:
- From the Fing Dashboard left navigation bar, Select People.
- If no users have been defined, you will be prompted to manually Add a User or select Auto-discovery to automatically detect users.
- If you have at least one user defined, you will see the existing user information and the option to add more.
- Select the Add user button to display the Add User window.
- Enter the user's details and click Continue. The Select user's devices page is displayed.
- Select a device and click Save. In this example, the Apple device is identified as the new user's presence device.
Assign Users With Fing Web App
To show or track users on Fing Web App, do this:
- Select People from the left navigation menu on the Dashboard, or click on the Who's Online Card on the Dashboard.
- Select Manage users to assign new users to devices or make changes.
- The Add User window is displayed. Add the user information and click Continue to display the Assign Presence Device window.
- Select the Device you wish to assign as the Presence device, and then click Save.
Manage and View Presence Activity from Fing Web App and Fing Desktop
You can view or configure users, online presence timelines, or set network limits from the Presence window.
Users
You can add or view existing users in the Network Users Panel. Select Add User to create a new user and follow the prompts. Select Auto Discovery to add users automatically.
Online Presence Over Time
Select the Online Presence Over Time to view time spent online and offline in the last day, 7 days, or 28 days. Select Timeline on the Presence bar to get detailed information about online and offline activity for each user.

Assign a User with Fing Mobile App or Mobile App Controlled Agent
To assign users on Fing Mobile App, do this:
- From the Fing home page or dashboard, select Overview, and then select the Online Users bar .
- Select Add User. In the name field, enter the user name, in this example, Anita, and then select the category--family, other.
- Under Select the user's device, select a device to assign to Anita to track her presence, in this example, the Intel device.
Click Save to save changes.
Show Online Presence Report Using Fing Mobile App or Fing Mobile App Controlled Agent
You can display information on users and their devices, and you can also email a report to yourself.
To display a timeline report for all users, do this:
- From the Fing Dashboard or Home Page, select the People card to show the People window.
- Select Timeline on the Who's At Home section of the People window.
To email a presence report to yourself, select Report.
To display presence timeline and detail for a specific user, select the user's name and then select Timeline.
Presence Window
- Users Carousel: This is a row of circular icons at the top of the People page. It shows who is currently online. Access users' details by clicking on their icon.
- Online Users: A green dot is on the user's circular icon.
- Offline Users: There is no green dot on the user's circular icon.
- Summary Graph: There is a heading called Who's at home below the users carousel. Here, there is a chart that shows when user's presence devices were online today, yesterday and in the past seven days.
Remove or Change User Details
To change user information on Fing Mobile App or App Controlled Agent, do this:
- Click the user's circular icon in the People page
- Click Edit
- Once you have made your selected edits, click Save in the top right corner
To remove a user:
- Click the user's circular icon in the People page
- Click Edit
- Click Delete in the top right corner
Remove or Change User Details Using Fing Web App
To change user information:
- On the Fing Web App Dashboard, select the Who's Online (Users) Card. The People page is displayed.
- On the People page, select the name of the user whose information you want to change.
- Select Edit from the upper right-side horizontal menu. In the user information pop-up window, enter the information for that user. Click Apply to save the changes.
To remove a user:
- On the Fing Web App Dashboard, select the Who's Online (Users) Card. The People page is displayed.
- On the People page, select the name of the user you want to remove.
- Select the Trashcan Icon from the right-side horizontal menu.
- Confirm you want to delete the user on the pop-up menu.
Remove or Change User Details Using Fing Desktop
To change user details, do this:
- Click the user's circular icon in the People page.
- Click Edit.
- Once you have made your selected edits, click Continue.
- One you have made your device edits, click Save.
To remove a user, do this:
- Click the user's circular icon in the People page.
- Click Delete.
