Migration Path: 3.x → 4.0
Ready to upgrade from Fing Desktop 3.x to 4.0? Here's what you need to know before you start.
- ✅ Your data is safe in your account. All your network history, device names, and settings are stored in your Fing account — they won't be affected by the upgrade.
- ⚠️ Installing on Windows? Please read the known limitations below before proceeding.
Installation Does Not Automatically Overwrite Version 3.x (Windows Only)
Affected platform: Windows
Status: Known issue – fix planned for final release
On Windows, the Fing Desktop 4.0 beta installer does not automatically replace an existing installation of version 3.x. Attempting to install the beta on top of a previous version may result in unexpected behavior.
What to do
Before installing the beta, please follow these steps:
- Uninstall your current version of Fing Desktop via Settings > Apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features) on your Windows machine.
- Download and install Fing Desktop 4.0 Beta from the link provided.
- Launch the app and log in with your Fing account.
Don't worry about your data — uninstalling version 3.x will not delete any of your settings, network history, or device information. Everything is tied to your Fing account and will be fully restored once you log back in.
Discovery Error on First Launch
Affected platform: All platforms
Status: Known issue – fix planned for a future beta update
When launching Fing Desktop 4.0 Beta for the first time, you may encounter a discovery error that prevents your network devices from loading correctly. This is a one-time initialization issue and is easy to resolve.
What to do
Simply trigger a manual network scan:
- Look for the "Scan Network" button in the top-right corner of the app.
- Click it to start a fresh discovery scan.
- Within a few moments, your network devices should appear as expected.
You should not experience this issue on subsequent launches.
