Getting Started With Fingbox Business

Just received your network cybersecurity device? Here’s everything you need to know about getting started with Fingbox Business.

Main App Tabs

Before we start, lets have a quick look at the main tabs. When you Login to the Fing app, you’ll see 3 main tabs (at the very bottom of the screen). Here’s a quick snapshot of what each of the tabs does.

  • Devices:This tab shows you your device inventory (i.e. all the active devices seen by Fingbox)
  • Network:This tab contains all the tools to protect and troubleshoot your network
  • People:from the People tab you will access Digital Presence (who is on the network and when they came and went), The Digital Fence, Device Blocking, Internet Pause. You will also be able to access all devices Restricted and all Internet Pause schedules which are in place.

Top 6 features to play with when you are getting started with Fingbox Business

Once you’ve already unboxed your Fingboxdownloaded the Fing app and connected your Fingbox, it’s time to get started with Fingbox features.

Here are the main actions you should take on your first day with Fingbox Business to get the most of your device and experience.

1) See What’s On Your Business’ Network

Visit the “Devices” tab where you’ll see all the devices which are connected to the network. Your devices will be displayed with details including:

  • Name: The name the device has been given. For example; Violet’s MacBook.
  • Type icon: What kind of device is it. For example, mobile, tablet, computer, TV, VoIP phone.
  • Vendor: The maker of your device. For example, Apple.
  • Model: The generation of the device. For example, MacBook PRO.
  • IP address: The numeric identifier assigned to the device on this network. Usually, it’s temporary and can change over time, typically assigned by the DHCP service running on the Internet router.
  • MAC address: This is the serial number of the device which is set when the device is made at the factory. Note that the MAC address of the device is only displayed if the model information is not available.

By clicking on a device you can see more information, but also rename it to a more relevant name for you, i.e. meeting room TV.

Device Tab Icons:

At the top of the Devices Screen, each icon represents an action that can be completed.

  • CIRCLE icon: runs another Fing scan
  • DROP DOWN icon: you can easily switch between network
  • AVATAR: access account settings
  • BURGER icon (3 lines icon):allows you to sort/filter your devices list

For example, try these:

  1. Sort your list by device name
  2. Sort your list by last change (i.e. show first what went online/offline recently)
  3. Sort your list by vendor
  4. Sort your list by state (online devices first)

Sorting your devices by any of these criteria will give you a better feel for what display of information works best for you.

2) Create Users & Assign Personal Devices

One of the most important Fingbox features is Digital Presence. To enable Digital Presence, you need to create users and assign personal devices to each of them.

From the People tab click on the circle with a plus (+) sign to create a new user. Choose the devices belonging to that person; for example, their mobile phones, computers and tablets. Then make sure to assign a device that represents that person’s presence – this is the device that reflects their movement in and out of the office. A smart phone, for example, is likely to always be on them, whereas their desktop computer stays in the office at all times.

To select the PRESENCE Device, click on the user in the user carousel and then select Devices in the pop-up. Find the device you wish to turn into the PRESENCE device and click the CHANGE button on the right-hand side of the device. This will then give you the option to state that it always travels with that user. You will then see the CHANGE become PRESENCE.

3) Turn on Alerts & Identify New Devices

Turning on Fing alerts on specific devices is essential to having an always-on Fing experience. Alerts for new devices connecting to your network are also essential to Network Security. From the network screen, be sure to turn on alerts for new devices. When new devices are found on your network they will appear on your Fingbox dashboard.

When new devices connect to your network, they will appear on your Dashboard where you can choose how they are handled. You have the following choices available:

  • Assign: A device that has appeared more than once but does not belong to any user. Assign it to a user to keep track of presence
  • Manage: Block or assign the device
  • Identify:Fill in the missing details about the device – then choose to assign it to a user or block it

Your goal is to keep the new list of devices on your dashboard empty always!

4) Check Your Internet Speed

It’s important to take a measurement of your Internet Speed as soon as possible. This is because your entire Fingbox experience will be scaled based on the results of your Internet Speed test (don’t worry, the scale will be updated every time you do it).

For example, the Bandwidth Analysis feature which is used to detect Bandwidth Hogging devices needs to be relative to your overall Internet Speed. This is because a device using 10 Mbit/s on a network with an Internet speed of 20 is significant; whereas a device consuming 10 Mbit/s on a network with an Internet Speed of 150 Mbit/s is not very significant compared to the overall capacity of the Internet connection.

All your Internet Speed tests will be recorded under the BOOK icon, so you can understand whether your Internet Speed is performing better or worse than in the past. You can also set scheduled speed tests so you can see the performance over time.

5) Check the Wi-Fi Speed For Where You Are

Now it’s time to check your Wi-Fi speed around your office. This feature is designed to help you understand the best places for Wi-Fi in your office and if there are any “dead” zones which may require you to add another access point or change your network set-up.

  • Launch the Wi-Fi Speed Test near your Wi-Fi router à this should measure a high speed (this is just between your Wi-Fi router and your mobile device, completely independent from the Internet speed)
  • Afterward, go in every room in your office and launch the Wi-Fi Speed test again and Fingbox will give you the speed for that room.
  • All your Wi-Fi Speed Test results will be recorded under “Recent” where you will be able to compare them

6) Set Up Your Cyber Security and Content Filtering

The problem most modern businesses face is the bringing in of personal devices onto the office network. There is not way of preventing malware entering the network via these devices without enforcing employees to install security measures – this would be very challenging.

Fingbox, however, allows to apply cyber security and content filtering to all devices whilst they are present on the network!
