Presence allows you to see and monitor who is using your network and for how long over a specified period of time. Assigning a user to a device tells you who owns selected devices on your network, such as family members or home service providers. Assigning a user to a presence device allows you to know and track that user's time connected to the network or internet.
You can assign multiple devices to users but only one presence device. A presence device is the device you assign to a user, and from which you can get presence alerts. For example, if your child's presence device is their phone, you will be notified if this device has entered your network when your child comes home, or if this device is online or offline. You may have assigned other devices to your child such as a laptop and smart watch, but you will not get alerts if these devices join your network or go online or offline.
Fing recommends selecting a mobile phone as a presence device. Select the device that you carry with you 24/7 or usually. A tablet or smartwatch may be another good option.
To assign a presence device, you must assign users to devices first. In summary, to set up users and presence, do this.
- Assign a User to a Device(s).
- Assign a Presence Device for each user.
- Track User time spent on the network.
