Presence allows you to see and monitor who is using your network and for how long over a specified period of time.  Assigning a user to a device tells you who owns selected devices on your network, such as family members or home service providers.  Assigning a user to a presence device allows you to know and track that user's time connected to the network or internet.

You can assign multiple devices to users but only one presence device. A presence device is the device you assign to a user, and from which you can get presence alerts. For example, if your child's presence device is their phone, you will be notified if this device has entered your network when your child comes home, or if this device is online or offline. You may have assigned other devices to your child such as their laptop and smart watch, but you will not get alerts if these devices join your network or go online or offline.

Fing recommends selecting a mobile phone as a presence device. Select the device that you carry with you 24/7 or usually. A tablet or smartwatch may be another good option.

To assign a presence device, you must assign users to devices first. In summary, to set up users and presence, do this.

  • Assign a User to a Device(s).
  • Assign a Presence Device for each user.
  • Track User time spent on the network.

Assign a User to a Device Using Fing Desktop

  1. Click People in the left sidebar
  2. Click the Add user button
  3. This will open the Add user window. Enter the user's details and click Continue.
  4. This will bring you to the Select user's devices page. Select a device and click Save.

Assign a User to a Device Using Fing Mobile App

  1. Click Overview in the bottom toolbar
  2. Click the Online Devices widget or the blue See devices button
  3. Click the Devices tab at the top of the page
  4. Select a device. This will take you to the Device detail page.
  5. Scroll down to the Assign to user button under Manage this device
  6. This will take you to the Edit page. Here, you can enter the user's details, turn on notifications and select the user's device.
  7. Once you have made these selections, click Save

Set Up  a User's Presence Device

When assigning a user's devices, you can make one device a user's presence device.

 

Set up a Presence Device With the Fing Mobile App

  • From Overview, click the Users widget. Alternatively, click the Online Devices widget and then click the People tab.
  • Click the blue Add user button
  • This will bring you to the Edit page. Here, select the devices that belong to the user.
  • When you have the devices selected, a blue Change button will appear beside the devices. Click the Change button and select 'Yes, it's a personal device' to make a device a user's presence device. The Change button will now change to a blue Presence button. Click 'No, it may be left behind' if you do not want to make a device a user's personal device.
  • Click Save in the top right corner of the screen

Set Up a Presence Device using Fing Desktop

  • Click the People tab on the left sidebar. Alternatively, from Overview click the Users widget.
  • Click the Add user button
  • Enter a Display name and select a Contact Type
  • Click the blue Continue button
  • Select the devices that belong to the user
  • When you have multiple devices selected, a grey button that says Other device will appear beside each device. Click this button beside the device you wish to be the user's Presence device and the button will change to say Presence device.
  • Click Save

Show Online User Presence Timelines and Reports

You can track your assigned users' time online and specify different time intervals to track.   You can also generate email reports of presence activity. 

Show Online User Presence  Using Fing Desktop App

To show user information using the Fing Desktop App, from the Dashboard, select Overview > People.  

From the People window, select View Timeline and specify the desired timeline.   In the example, the timeline is specified as the previous 7 day period.

Show Online Presence Report Using Fing Mobile App

  • Click the user's circular icon in the People page
  • Click the blue Timeline icon. This will open the user's Timeline page.

Presence  Window 

  • Users Carousel: This is a row of circular icons at the top of the People page. It shows who is currently online. Access users' details by clicking on their icon.
  • Online Users: A green dot is on the user's circular icon
  • Offline Users: There is no green dot on the user's circular icon
  • Summary Graph: There is a heading called Who's at home below the users carousel. Here, there is a chart that shows when user's presence devices were online today, yesterday and in the past seven days.

Edit or Delete a user

Fing Mobile

To edit a user:

  1. Click the user's circular icon in the People page
  2. Click Edit
  3. Once you have made your selected edits, click Save in the top right corner

To delete a user:

  1. Click the user's circular icon in the People page
  2. Click Edit
  3. Click Delete in the top right corner

Fing Desktop

To edit a user:

  1. Click the user's circular icon in the People page
  2. Click Edit
  3. Once you have made your selected edits, click Continue
  4. One you have made your device edits, click Save

To delete a user:

  1. Click the user's circular icon in the People page
  2. Click Delete
